Principles of Effective Communication
General communication skills is when someone
try to convey a message or point to another person or an audience. The audience
is what determines what kind of language will be used and what manner will the
message delivered
Differentiating between facts and opinion.
Differentiating between facts and opinion is
important but it can be very difficult when trying to communicate a topic or
issue that is of a sensitive, moral, ethical, personal or emotive nature. That
is why it is very important that before a presenting these issues that what is
being said is based on evidence and research that can be prove and are true or
false but an opinion on the other hand is based on experiences or hearsay and
is different for each person and can be changed.
Cultural consideration
Cultural consideration is important when it
comes to communication. Different cultures can have different meaning for
things. They may have a different language, accent or beliefs. They can also
have different political view or sociality. It is very important that cultural differences
are taking into consideration and respected when addressing your audience.
Written communication is another form of communication. It
not as simple as knowing how to type or write using your hand. It require
language knowledge so that the audience understands what the message is that is
be convey to them as visual cues such as body language or aural cues such as
tone of voice will not be available to them. Written communication can be
formal in terms of providing a legal seal such as a contract of employment or a
business agreement.
Note Taking
Taking notes can be an important feature in written
communication as it can form the basis of future documents there are different
way that notes can be taken.
One way of taking notes is to writing them down in bullet
and key points.
Taking notes in the way can be very quick, specific and
easy to apply as there are build-in features in application software packages.
Bullets points can be format as a short sentence or a single word. Another
method of taking notes is shorthand. Shorthand is when someone turns a complete
word into a short symbols to speed up the process of taking notes. Spider
diagrams is a way of taking notes by using keywords and word or subject
associations. Quotations is when some writes down a specific phrase or a quote
from a particular authors or it can be or sources that can be used as
references for future research. Annotation is another way to take notes these
are used to provide an expansion to thoughts or ideas. Annotations can be
textual or graphical.
Review and Editing Documents Created by Others
There are different methods of can be used to review and
edit documents that are created by different people. These techniques for
reviewing and edited work can range from proofreading. This is to check for currency,
correctness and relevance in the content. Other can involve highlighting text, using comment boxes,
inserting footnotes or endnotes or applying some sort of formatting such as
‘strike through’ to delete text.
Interpersonal skills
Communication has one requirement, communication needs to
be between two or more people. A person can covey a message by using words.
These word can spoken or they can be written but there are other ways to
communicate with a person with out using words. These methods are signs,
signals, facial and bodily expressions and silence. Other people can pick up on
these methods by using their senses to get the general idea of what the message
is going to be.
Body language
Body language can be effective when try communicating with
someone face to face. Word have more impact when they are accompany with gestures.
These gesture can come a person’s hand, arm, face and the movement of the person’s
body. A different gesture for different kinds of points can make the point stay
in the mind of the intended audience. Body language does not work if the other
person is on the other line of phone or
can not see the who is talking to them as body language can only be conveyed
face to face.
