Barriers to Communication and how to overcome them

Barriers of General Communication

Choice of terminology when communicating with people of different ages. This can be consider a barrier of General Communication as different generations have different types of terminology and slang and the terminology changes and evolves with each generation so most people and the older generation find it hard to keep up with and understand this new terms and what each term means. This is even harder for the older generations as most of the new terminology is created on the internet and most elderly do not know how to use the internet so to over come this barrier it is better to avoid using those types of slang and technologic terms and use more general term that is easy for any one to understand. Another way to over come this barrier is to tailor the language to the age of the audience
to insure that you do not use terms that the audience can understand.

Cultural considerations can be consider a barrier of General Communication as some people may take offends at what your or say and something else might be consider racially insensitive to other cultures or the people of that race. One method to overcome this barrier is to do extensive research on the culture that you are discussing and insure that your speech is accurate as possible. Another method to over come this barrier is to have someone of the culture that you are discussing to read over the speech to insure that it’s accurate and that it does not offend the people of that culture it can also insure that your speech is racially sensitive and does not alienate the audience.

One other way to over this barrier is to Translate all important documents in the require language so that all people can understand and do not miss any important information that is being passed on.

Barriers of Interpersonal

Not speaking clearly

Not speaking clearly can be consider a barrier of Interpersonal Communication because if the speaker is speaking lowly or not forming there words correctly it will be hard of the people listening to take in what is being said. This is the same problem if the speaker is speaking to fast the listener’s will not understand what the speaker is saying. The most effect way to over come this barrier is for the speaker to take there time and slowly and clearly form there words so that the listeners understand what is being said to them. Another way to overcome this barrier is for the speaker to project their voice so it is easier of the listener to hear what is being said.

One other way to overcome this barrier is to have a PowerPoint on a screen so that the audience can read along with the speaker and so that can understand what the speaker is saying and not miss any important information.  

Not Engaging the Audience

Not engaging the audience can be consisted a barrier of Interpersonal Communication because if the speaker is not Engaging their audience the audience will be bored with the speech and not listen to what is going on.

A way to overcome this barrier is for the speaker to engage their audience by using body movement hand gestures and ask them question as the speech progress.

Another way to overcome this barrier is to ask the audience question during and at the end of the presentation to insure that the audience is playing attention to what is being said and will engage them. 

Barriers of Written

Spelling and grammar

Spelling and grammar can be consider a barrier of written Communication as if some words are misspelled and grammar is missing it can be hard for the person to understand what the writer is trying to say. A way to overcome this barrier is to have another person to read it and check the spelling of each word and correct the words that are misspelled and insure that there is grammar and that the grammar is being used correctly. Another way is to use a program such as Microsoft Word as it has an auto-correct feature that will correct the spelling and grammar.
Another way to over come this barrier is to have a scrip to write what you want to say.
 

Bad Hand Writing

Bad Hand Writing can be consider a barrier of written Communication as it can be hard of some people to read as certain words can appear as a different word and then it will confuse the reader to what the writer is try to say. A method to overcome this barrier is for the writer to type out the document so that is clear of the reader to read. Another way to overcome this barrier is to have someone with clear neat hand writing or a scribe to write out the document for them.
